the Imperfection Etudes no. 1-5 (five studies on the 'perfect' fifth)

‘I realized that everything in the world was an interplay of identical particles comprising different kinds of consonance: the trees, the water, you. All was unified, equivalent, divine.’ - Vladimir Nabokov from the short story 'Sounds'

The Imperfections Etudes is a suite of five compositional studies on the interval of the ‘perfect’ fifth. Declared to be ‘perfect’ by the ancient harmonists as they sought to discover a divine order of the universe, the perfect fifth is a fundamental of virtually all musical systems throughout the world, as it creates a feeling of resolution to the human ear. Western equal temperament tuning has bent this so-called ‘perfect’ 2:3 ratio for the sake of its polyphony and chromaticism. Over five pieces, the suite meditates on the starkly majestic consonance and opaque simplicity of this paradoxical sound, at once modern and ancient.

The Imperfection Etudes were performed by pianist Barış Büyükyıldırım and presented as a video installation as part of Sroka's solo exhibition Spectral Variations at Pasaj Istanbul in 2025.
