The exhibition title 'Spectral Variations' of Sroka's 2025 solo show with Pasaj Istanbul was taken from the work ‘spectral variations on the Well Tempered Clavier by Johann Sebastian Bach.’ J. S. Bach’s composition, “The Well Tempered Clavier,” was the first to cycle through all 24 major and minor keys of equal tempered tuning, a major innovation in what has become the hegemonic tuning system of most music today. The installation uses a custom MaxMSP software patch to slice the 20,000 hertz (frequencies) of our audible spectrum into approximately 300 slivers, deconstructing Bach’s monumental work into a continuously shifting sonic abstraction. In a completely darkened space, precise frequencies appear and disappear, foregrounding minute fragments of our full spectrum of hearing, questioning the ways music has been organized and homogenized historically, and how we’ve been conditioned to hear.
